Workplace Assessors & Moderators
WHAT DO I DO AS A WORKPLACE ASSESSOR?

Workplace assessors assess learners' skills, knowledge, and competence in the workplace against the requirements of unit standards from the National Qualifications Framework.

As a workplace assessor you:

  • plan assessment with learners and others involved in the assessment process
  • guide learners about how best to collect evidence of their competence
  • assess learners' evidence and decide whether it meets the unit standard's requirements - does the evidence show clearly the learner can meet the standard consistently?
  • provide feedback to learners about their evidence
  • tell learners their assessment results
  • report learners' assessment results to Learning State by downloading and completing the Unit Standard Results Reporting form
    Download Unit Standard Reporting Forms
  • arrange reassessments for learners
  • maintain records of assessment activities and results
  • participate in moderation activities.

You assess in a workplace within the policies and procedures of your employing agency and Learning State. This makes sure you and the learner are adequately resourced and that moderation and other quality management systems are in place.

A critical component of the role

A critical component of your role is reporting to Learning State when a learner's knowledge and achievements meet national standards. This means the learner can then be awarded credit.

Do I get paid for assessing?

If you are employed by an agency, then you carry out assessor work as part of your role in the agency.

If you are not an employee of a member agency, you may be paid for assessing.

The fee is usually paid for each hour or standard assessed.

You negotiate the fee with the agency and its learner.

Make sure you are clear about what the fee covers, for example on-site time, off-site time, reassessment, planning, and meetings before and after assessment.
