HOW DO I BECOME A WORKPLACE ASSESSOR?

The four stages to becoming a registered workplace assessor are set out in detail below. They are:

If you want to register as a workplace assessor and you:

  • work in a State sector agency, talk to your manager
  • are self-employed, talk to a Learning State Advisor.

Stage 1: nomination

To be a workplace assessor if you work in a State sector agency, your manager needs to nominate you to become an assessor and your agency must support you as an assessor.

Workplace assessors may also be self-employed, offering assessment services to learners and workplaces.

Stage 2: expertise

To be a registered workplace assessor, you need three types of expertise.

1. Technical expertise - the skill, knowledge, and ability in the technical subject of the standards you will assess.

2. Assessment expertise - the skill, knowledge, and ability to assess learners' evidence in a workplace using assessment guides and standards.

3. Communication and relationship management expertise - the skill, knowledge, and ability to communicate well with learners, trainers, managers, and others involved in assessment.

Stage 3: qualification

Do you have technical expertise?

You must be skilled and/or qualified in the areas you want to assess. This means you must have reached at least one level higher than the unit standards you want to be registered to assess.

Do you have assessment expertise?

You must have unit standard 4098 (use standards to assess performance). This proves you can:

  • implement standards-based assessment
